Hi!

My name is Jaira (Ha-e-rA) Munoz Zavala. I'm an undergraduate in Arizona State University. I'm double majoring in Forensic Science and Fine Arts, Sculpture.


It has been interesting to drive between the Tempe and the Glendale campuses. At ASU West, I volunteer in Dr. Weidner's Forensic Entomology laboratory. Thanks to her, I had the opportunity to present in ESA (Entomology Society of America), NAFEA (North American Forensic Entomology), and WAESO (Western Alliance to Expand Student Opportunities). I started by assisting in a decomposition research to analyze the initial arrival of insects and arthropods to remains in Phoenix. Now, I'm focusing in Chrysomya Rufifacies, This is an invasive blow fly that eats the larvae of other native blow flies. Right now, I'm researching their oviposition preferences. Also, last semester, I started volunteering in Dr. Kanthaswamy DNA Laboratory. Here, I assist during the DNA extraction of blood samples.



I used to focus in surrealistic art, mostly based on plants and human organs. Now, I'm working in communication science through art. I'm sculpting pieces to represent and explain the research from Dr. Weidner's and Dr. Kanthaswamy's laboratory. Also, I'm practicing to sculpt faces because my goal is to work in the border helping people who lost their loved one in the border. In cases where DNA analysis is not possible, but remains are recovered, I'm hoping to use drawings and sculptures to recreate the face of the person. 


In my free time, I like to explore the valley and rest. I'm a huge fan of anime and webtoons/manhwa/manga/comics.














If I have to chose a favorite anime, it would be Natsume's book of friends. I'm hoping to buy the movies one day...if I find them. My favorite manhwas so far is "Another Typical Romance Fantasy" and the "The Royal Lady with the Lamp." Fun fact! did you know that the lady with the lamp actually existed her name was Florence Nightingale. She set the standards for modern nursing. For the rest of her life, she continued to campaign for improved sanitary conditions in both military and civilian hospitals.

CULTURAL INTELLIGENCE

Something that I learn about cultural intelligence and cultural responsiveness is to first have cultural openness and cultural awareness. From what I understood one has to be open to learn about other people's culture with an open mind. However, this doesn't mean to be invasive or assume somebody's cultural background.  I like the definition of  Business professors P. Christopher Earley and Elaine Mosakowski about cultural intelligence. They define it as “an outsider’s seemingly natural ability to interpret someone’s unfamiliar and ambiguous gestures the way that person’s compatriots would.”  This means to have the ability to relate to people from other cultures by empathizing and actively working to understand customs and norms of other cultures besides our own  ( What Is Cultural Intelligence and Why Is It Key to Business? – Nationwide , n.d.). First Day! Streak Method, Gram Stain Test and Microscope.

First day in the STEM-TRAIN program. I learned about the “Streak Plate Method”, the “Gram Stain Test” and how to use a microscope. (Sept. 10th, 2019) V-Fisheri bacteria At the beginning of the class, Shawn, a senior student, explained to me the experiment he was working on. He was working with V-fisheri bacteria that have as bioluminescent properties. The goal of his experiment is to find some components that can stop the bacteria from releasing AHL molecules. The V-fischeri bacteria is a gram-negative bacterium found in marine environments When it multiplies and it is ready to communicate with each other, it releases QS molecules. When these molecules are released, the biofilm glows.
