TRAIN MIXER 2023

TRAIN MIXER, AND ASU OPPORTUNITIES

This semester there were not many transfer train students at ASU. I was sitting on the Forensics table with Dr. Weidner and a classmate. I believe only three or so students were transferring. Thus, I didn't have the opportunity to talk to them. The only person I talked with, who was planning to be a TRAIN student, was a computer major.

When I attended this meeting and was a community college student, there were other students interested in forensics science. I was surprised there were none this time. Back then, I was nervous about finding a professor to work with. When I first enrolled at ASU, I was an Arts student in Tempe. I saw how competitive it was just to be noticed in a normal class. I was overwhelmed, and believed that it would be impossible to get an opportunity--for anything. At ASU West, it is way easier to receive the help you need, and it is easier to approach professors.

For people interested in working in research, in Forensics, at ASU West:

Look into your major map, and then search which professors teaches each of the classes. Once you know who they are, just email them, and show interest in their research. Professors will reply, but make sure to use your student email because it might be send to spam if you use your personal email or will not be sent.

The forensics program has these news that are sent through email. It will show internships, scholarships, research, volunteering and job opportunities, so check your emails.

Don't just email a single professor, email as many as you can. Even if you are not able to get into the laboratory you want, having the experience in any laboratory will help you out later on.

If you enroll in Barrett, you might be able to work in a professor's laboratory for honors credit. Also,  some professors prefer students to take or have taken their class before they becoming part of their laboratories. Thus, as soon as you start taking your classes, start talking to professors in their office hours.

The TRAIN program will financially support you in your research and any travel that involves your research. Also, if you enroll in Barrett, take advantage of their travel scholarships to go to forensics symposiums and present.

Never is too early to apply for volunteering and internships. Actually, the sooner, the better because applications might not be reviewed for the first few months.

ASU has programs that will allow you to work in research and get pay for it. One of them in NCUIRE. Here, there are different levels from just assisting in someone's research to be the one in charged of your own research. Another one is WAESO.

Work hard in your classes. The forensic teachers at ASU West are not just professors but forensic scientists outside of school. They will be able to help you to find a job, and their letters of recommendations will help you to get the job.
